Driverless Taxi Service Expands in Abu Dhabi, Covers Two Major Islands

The Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT), in collaboration with WeRide, Uber, and Tawasul Transport, has officially launched driverless taxi services across Al Reem and Al Maryah Islands. This step supports Abu Dhabi’s goal for smart and sustainable transportation. The new fleet of autonomous taxis uses Level 4 self-driving technology, which allows the vehicles to navigate city roads with little human input. Currently, each vehicle has a safety driver during the trial phase. Officials expect fully driverless operations to begin by late summer 2025, pending regulatory approval. “This expansion marks a major milestone in our journey toward a smarter and safer mobility system,” said Dr. Abdulla Hamad AlGhfeli, Acting Director-General of Abu Dhabi Mobility. The robotaxi fleet is now active in key areas of Abu Dhabi, including Al Reem, Al Maryah, Yas, and Saadiyat Islands. It also serves routes connecting to Zayed International Airport. Since its soft launch in December 2024, the service has tripled in size, showing growing public interest and ride volumes. Jennifer Li, CFO of WeRide, emphasized the importance of this phase: “Al Reem and Al Maryah offer an ideal environment to showcase our driverless tech. We’re proud to bring this innovation to Abu Dhabi.” This initiative supports Abu Dhabi’s Smart Mobility 2040 plan, which aims for 25% of all transport trips to be made using smart solutions. Officials estimate that the system could reduce traffic accidents by up to 18% and cut carbon emissions by 15%, which aligns with wider sustainability goals.
