Manhattan Shooting: Suspect Shane Tamura Kills 4, Including NYPD Officer
New York City. A mass shooting at a Manhattan high-rise office building on Monday has left four people dead, including a decorated NYPD officer, and one person critically injured. Authorities have identified the gunman as Shane Devon Tamura, a 27-year-old former high school football player from Las Vegas, Nevada. The attack took place inside the 44-story office tower at 345 Park Avenue, which houses major firms, including the NFL headquarters and Blackstone.
Shooter Opens Fire on 33rd Floor
Tamura, armed with an M4-style rifle, entered the building around 5:30 p.m. He started shooting in the lobby before taking an elevator to the 33rd floor, where he continued his rampage. According to the NYPD, Tamura fatally shot three individuals before turning the gun on himself. Among the victims was Officer Didarul Islam, a four-year NYPD veteran who responded to the scene and was fatally wounded during the exchange. A Blackstone executive, a security guard, and another unidentified victim were also killed. An NFL employee suffered multiple gunshot wounds and remains in critical but stable condition.
Suspect Believed He Had CTE, Blamed NFL
Investigators found a three-page handwritten note in Tamura’s hotel room in Manhattan. He claimed he was suffering from Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), a brain condition linked to repeated head trauma often seen in football players. Though Tamura never played professionally, he had a history as a high school football linebacker in California. The letter mentioned the NFL, mental health issues, and former players who were diagnosed posthumously with CTE. Police say he may have targeted the building because of its connection to the NFL, although officials believe he mistakenly entered a floor not occupied by the league.
Timeline and Response
Tamura reportedly drove cross-country from Las Vegas with multiple weapons and prescription medications. The NYPD confirmed he acted alone and that there is no ongoing threat to the public. Mayor Eric Adams and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch praised the quick response of law enforcement and honored Officer Islam, calling his death a tremendous loss to the city.
Building Placed on Lockdown
The entire building was locked down for over three hours while tactical teams searched all floors. The incident caused shockwaves across Midtown Manhattan and led to a temporary closure of nearby streets. The NFL released a brief statement, offering condolences and stating they are fully cooperating with the investigation. They are also reviewing additional security measures.

Authorities are examining Tamura’s writings, digital devices, and travel records to understand his motives and mental health background. Officials say the shooter had no known criminal record, but he may have suffered from untreated mental illness.
