Colombian Hot Dogs (Perros Calientes Colombianos)
Colombian hot dogs are a colorful, flavor-packed twist on the classic — loaded with unique toppings like pineapple sauce, crushed potato chips, and pink sauce. They’re sweet, savory, and full of texture in every bite.
Ingredients (for 4 hot dogs)
For the hot dogs
- 4 beef or chicken hot dog sausages
- 4 hot dog buns (soft and slightly sweet, if possible)
- Butter (for toasting the buns)
Toppings
- 1 cup finely shredded lettuce
- 1 cup grated carrots
- 1/2 cup diced pineapple (fresh or canned)
- 1/2 cup crushed potato chips (plain or BBQ)
- 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella or cheddar cheese
- 1/4 cup chopped green onions (optional)
For the sauces
- Pink Sauce: 1/4 cup mayonnaise + 2 tbsp ketchup (mix until smooth)
- Pineapple Sauce: 1/2 cup pineapple juice + 1 tbsp sugar + 1 tsp cornstarch (cook over low heat until thick)
- Yellow mustard (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the pineapple sauce
- In a small saucepan, combine pineapple juice, sugar, and cornstarch.
- Cook on low heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens into a light syrup.
- Let it cool before using.
- Cook the sausages
- Boil, grill, or pan-fry the sausages until fully heated.
- Toast the buns lightly with a bit of butter for extra flavor.
- Assemble your hot dogs
- Place the sausage inside the bun.
- Add shredded lettuce and carrots.
- Drizzle with pink sauce and pineapple sauce.
- Sprinkle cheese, chopped pineapple, and green onions.
- Top with crushed potato chips for crunch.
- Serve immediately
- These are best enjoyed fresh and warm, with plenty of napkins — it’s a messy (but glorious) experience!
