Colombian Hot Dogs (Perros Calientes Colombianos)

Colombian hot dogs are a colorful, flavor-packed twist on the classic — loaded with unique toppings like pineapple sauce, crushed potato chips, and pink sauce. They’re sweet, savory, and full of texture in every bite.

Ingredients (for 4 hot dogs)

For the hot dogs

  • 4 beef or chicken hot dog sausages
  • 4 hot dog buns (soft and slightly sweet, if possible)
  • Butter (for toasting the buns)

Toppings

  • 1 cup finely shredded lettuce
  • 1 cup grated carrots
  • 1/2 cup diced pineapple (fresh or canned)
  • 1/2 cup crushed potato chips (plain or BBQ)
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella or cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup chopped green onions (optional)

For the sauces

  • Pink Sauce: 1/4 cup mayonnaise + 2 tbsp ketchup (mix until smooth)
  • Pineapple Sauce: 1/2 cup pineapple juice + 1 tbsp sugar + 1 tsp cornstarch (cook over low heat until thick)
  • Yellow mustard (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the pineapple sauce
    • In a small saucepan, combine pineapple juice, sugar, and cornstarch.
    • Cook on low heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens into a light syrup.
    • Let it cool before using.
  2. Cook the sausages
    • Boil, grill, or pan-fry the sausages until fully heated.
    • Toast the buns lightly with a bit of butter for extra flavor.
  3. Assemble your hot dogs
    • Place the sausage inside the bun.
    • Add shredded lettuce and carrots.
    • Drizzle with pink sauce and pineapple sauce.
    • Sprinkle cheese, chopped pineapple, and green onions.
    • Top with crushed potato chips for crunch.
  4. Serve immediately
    • These are best enjoyed fresh and warm, with plenty of napkins — it’s a messy (but glorious) experience!
