Massive Blaze at Russian Industrial Plant Claims Lives
Deadly Fire at Russian Explosives Plant Kills 11, Injures 130 in Ryazan Region
Moscow – August 17, 2025 – A catastrophic fire and explosion at the Elastik synthetic-fiber plant in Russia’s Ryazan region has left 11 dead and 130 injured, prompting a nationwide debate on industrial safety.
The Disaster Unfolds
The blast occurred at 10:30 a.m. in a gunpowder workshop, triggering successive detonations that leveled the production bay. Two additional bodies were recovered overnight as rescuers sifted through twisted metal and debris.
Casualties and Medical Response
Twenty-nine victims remain hospitalized in Ryazan, while 16 with critical burns were airlifted to Moscow. Officials report 10 people in intensive care.
Emergency Response and Investigation
Russia’s Investigative Committee has opened a criminal probe into alleged safety violations. More than 70 emergency personnel and 28 vehicles were deployed, and Monday has been declared a regional day of mourning.
Plant’s Troubled History
The facility, which went bankrupt in 2015 and now leases space to explosives firms, also suffered a deadly blast in 2021 that killed 17 workers. Repeated incidents have intensified scrutiny of Russia’s defense-industry safety standards.
