Supreme Court Allows Sale and Bursting of Green Firecrackers in Delhi-NCR During Diwali

In a significant decision ahead of Diwali 2025, the Supreme Court of India has allowed the sale and bursting of green firecrackers in the Delhi-NCR region, provided they meet environmental safety standards. The ruling aims to balance festive traditions with the urgent need to curb air pollution.

The court clarified that only “green” or eco-friendly firecrackers, which emit less noise and reduced particulate matter, will be permitted. These firecrackers are designed to minimize emissions of harmful chemicals like barium, aluminum, and potassium nitrate, which contribute to Delhi’s already poor air quality during the festive season.

Authorities have been directed to strictly monitor the sale and use of these firecrackers. The Delhi Police and Pollution Control Boards are expected to ensure that only licensed vendors sell green crackers and that violators face strict penalties.

The court also reiterated that bursting should be restricted to specific time slots, particularly during Diwali evening hours, to limit pollution peaks.

This move comes as Delhi-NCR continues to struggle with rising air pollution levels each winter, often aggravated by stubble burning, vehicular emissions, and industrial pollutants. Experts believe this decision could help promote environmentally responsible celebrations while allowing citizens to enjoy traditional festivities.

Environmental groups, however, have urged the public to exercise restraint and prioritize clean air, emphasizing that even green firecrackers are not completely pollution-free.

As the festive season approaches, this ruling serves as a reminder that celebration and sustainability can go hand in hand when guided by responsibility and awareness.
