Siddaramaiah Takes Aim at Infosys Founders Over Caste Survey: Questions Their Understanding of Equality

Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has sparked a new controversy by targeting Infosys founders Narayana Murthy and Sudha Murty in connection with the state’s caste survey debate. His pointed remarks questioned whether business success equates to social understanding, stating that “true intelligence lies in recognizing inequality, not ignoring it.”

Siddaramaiah defended his government’s decision to release the Socio-Economic and Educational Survey, popularly known as the caste census, arguing that accurate data is crucial to creating fair policies. “We cannot ensure equality without knowing where inequality exists,” he said during an interaction with the media.

The Chief Minister’s comments came amid growing criticism from sections of society, including a few influential voices from the corporate world, who believe the caste survey could deepen social divides. Siddaramaiah countered this narrative, calling such opposition “elitist and disconnected from ground realities.”

“People who have achieved great success in business should also understand the importance of social justice. Building companies is one thing, building an equal society is another,” he said, in a clear reference to Infosys founders.

Political observers view Siddaramaiah’s remarks as part of a broader push to frame the caste survey as a step toward inclusive governance. The data, recently made public, revealed major socio-economic disparities among various communities, intensifying political debate across Karnataka.

While the Infosys founders have not officially commented on the issue, Siddaramaiah’s statements have reignited discussions around the intersection of privilege, corporate influence, and social equity.

As the state heads into a politically charged period, the caste survey and Siddaramaiah’s remarks are expected to remain central to Karnataka’s evolving social and political discourse.
