When most people think of an Indian passport, they picture the familiar navy blue booklet. But in reality, India issues passports in four different colours, each serving a specific purpose and category of holder. These colours are not just cosmetic — they represent the status, profession, and privileges of the passport bearer.

The Four Passport Colours of India

1. Dark Blue (Ordinary Passport)
   The most common type, the ordinary passport, is issued to Indian citizens for general travel purposes such as vacations, business trips, or study abroad. It comes in dark navy blue and is the one most Indians carry.
2. White Passport
   This is reserved for government officials and civil servants who travel abroad for official work. It helps foreign authorities easily identify that the holder is traveling on government duty.
3. Maroon Passport (Diplomatic Passport)
   Issued to Indian diplomats, top government officials, and designated representatives, the maroon passport signifies diplomatic status. Holders often enjoy privileges such as visa-free or priority access in many countries under international agreements.
4. Orange Passport (Discontinued)
   In 2018, India introduced an orange passport for workers who had not completed Class 10 education and required Emigration Check Required (ECR) clearance for overseas employment. However, due to concerns of discrimination, the plan was withdrawn, and the orange variant is no longer in circulation.
