Delhi’s Air Quality Slips into ‘Severe’ Category as Pollution Levels Soar Across the City

Delhi once again finds itself grappling with toxic air as pollution levels surged, pushing the Air Quality Index (AQI) into the ‘severe’ category. According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), several parts of the national capital recorded AQI readings above 400 — a level considered hazardous to human health.

Smog Blankets the City

Thick layers of smog have engulfed Delhi’s skyline, reducing visibility and worsening respiratory discomfort among residents. Areas such as Anand Vihar, Jahangirpuri, Punjabi Bagh, and RK Puram registered AQI levels between 420 and 460 on Saturday morning, reflecting extremely poor air quality.

Environmental experts attribute the alarming spike to a mix of stubble burning in neighboring states, vehicular emissions, and stagnant weather conditions that trap pollutants close to the ground. The combination of these factors has led to a choking haze over the capital, making daily commutes and outdoor activities difficult.

Authorities on High Alert

In response, the Delhi government has intensified its pollution control measures under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). Construction and demolition activities have been restricted, and the use of diesel generators has been curtailed. Schools have also been advised to conduct online classes if air quality remains hazardous.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal urged citizens to stay indoors as much as possible and use masks when stepping out. He also reiterated the need for collective action, saying, “This is not just Delhi’s fight — we need cooperation from neighboring states to control stubble burning.”

Health Concerns on the Rise

Doctors have reported a spike in patients complaining of breathing difficulties, eye irritation, and allergies. Experts warn that prolonged exposure to such polluted air can increase the risk of asthma, bronchitis, and cardiovascular diseases, especially among children and the elderly.

Way Forward

While short-term measures are being enforced, environmentalists stress the need for long-term solutions, such as promoting cleaner public transport, stricter emission norms, and increased green cover. Citizens, too, are encouraged to contribute by carpooling, reducing the use of firecrackers, and supporting sustainable living practices.

As Delhi struggles through another winter under a cloud of pollution, it serves as a grim reminder of the urgent need for comprehensive and coordinated efforts to combat air pollution — not just in the capital, but across the nation.
